BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Edna Kaufmann Shapiro received her BA from Mt. Holyoke College in 1946. After completing her degree she worked as a Research Assistant in the Psychosocial Research Unit at Mt. Holyoke. She left in 1947 to attend Yale University where she received an MA in psychology in 1948 and a PhD in 1951. While at Yale she worked as a Research Assistant in the Institute of Human Relations and an Instructor in Psychology at Bard College.

Shapiro's interest in the interplay of developmental psychology and education drew her to the Research Division of Bank Street College. She worked as a graduate faculty member and Research Psychologist until 1990 and served as the Research Division's Associate Dean from 1984 to 1987. She served as Distinguished Research Psychologist Emeritus until her death in 2005.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection documents Edna Shapiro's role as a member of the Research Division and faculty member at Bank Street College for more than thirty years. Additional records of her work in the Research Division are also included. Custodial History note: The Edna K. Shapiro Papers were donated to the Archives by Nancy Nager in 2006.

DESCRIPTIONS

SERIES A - Correspondence (1977-1993) includes some general correspondence along with correspondence to and from contributors to "Cognitive and Affective Growth: Developmental Interaction," and Edith Gordon and Viola Bernard regarding Gordon's dissertation on the history of Bank Street. Arrangement is chronological.

SERIES B - Lectures, Conferences and Publications (1949-2000) Subseries 1 includes lectures and speeches given by Shapiro between 1962 and 1991. Subseries 2 contains materials from a 1953 Vassar conference on "Implications of cross-cultural findings on childhood for workers with children." Subseries 3 includes various publications by Shapiro.

SERIES C - Faculty Affairs (1975-2002) contains materials from various events held in honor of Barbara Biber, as well as notes and correspondence regarding Biber. Charlotte Biber Winsor tribute notes and correspondence and notes toward a history of the Research Division at Bank Street are also included.

SERIES D - Personal and Biographical Materials contains a c.v. of Edna Shapiro and her honorary doctorate degree received in 1992.

SERIES E - Research (1979-1990) contains reports on child development research at Bank Street College and the Bank Street Speller, and a proposal for a 20-year follow-up study of 9 year olds.
