BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Elizabeth Chapman Gilkeson graduated from Vassar College in 1924 and received her Master’s Degree from Teachers College in 1937. Gilkeson founded the Poughkeepsie Day School and served as its director from 1934 to 1949, and was a member of the faculty in the Child Study Department at Vassar from 1935 to 1949. She continued to teach at the Vassar Summer Institute until 1953. From 1949 to 1954, Gilkeson was the director of Guidance at the New Lincoln School, as well as an instructor and advisor at Bank Street.

In 1954 she became the Chair of Bank Street's Children's Programs, and established the Bank Street School for Children. Under her leadership, the School for Children was expanded to include students through eighth grade. She also founded the Polly Miller Child Center and the Early Childhood Center, and developed the Bank Street Follow Through model. Elizabeth Gilkeson died in 1998.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Elizabeth C. Gilkeson Papers document her role as graduate faculty member, advisor and Chair of Children's Programs at Bank Street College. The collection also documents her role as founder of the Poughkeepsie Day School and Vassar College faculty member.

DESCRIPTIONS

SERIES A - Correspondence (1946-1997) contains correspondence from 1946 to 1997.

SERIES B - Lectures, Conferences, and Publications (1963-1984) consists primarily of speeches and conference materials, including planning materials for the Colloquium on the Professional Development of Early Childhood Personnel. Also included are a small number of published and unpublished writings.

SERIES C - Faculty Affairs (1958-1987) contains materials relating to various Bank Street programs and committees including Follow Through, Family and Child Center Task Force, and the Guidance Program. Also included are materials pertaining to other Bank Street faculty members.

SERIES D - Personal and Biographical Materials (1920-1993) includes various personal tributes, interview transcripts, newspaper clippings, and Vassar College materials. The series also contains psychological case studies conducted in private practice.

SERIES E - Coursework and Student Papers (1951-1989) consists primarily of materials from the course "A Child's World," including lecture notes, correspondence, course descriptions, assignments, and student papers. Series E also contains conference group notes, bibliographies and materials for other courses.

SERIES F - Subject File (1965-1979) consists of clippings, brochures, articles, and notes on various education-related topics organized by subject.

SERIES G - Children's Programs (1962-1988) contains classroom observations, Early Childhood Center proposals and work plan, and School for Children meeting minutes and notes.

SERIES H - Summer Training Institute (1963-1964) consists of the administrative and program files of the Training Institute for Differentiation and Remediation of the Learning Problems of Culturally Impoverished Children.
