The following are a small sample of the many interesting theses that were submitted in 2006. This list highlights the great variety of independent studies being done by Bank Street Graduate students.

Cafeterias

Jeng, Kinny. (2006) Everybody is crowded together : an investigative study of a public school cafeteria environment. Unpublished master's thesis. Bank Street College of Education, New York, NY.

Set in a New York City public school, this investigative report focuses on the environment in an elementary school cafeteria. Data was collected through observation, interviews, student surveys, attending school lunch committee meetings, and visiting a neighboring cafeteria for comparison purposes. Concludes with a critique of the school's new cafeteria environment.

Dance

De Gregorio, Elisa (2006) Footprints : exploring the steps taken by those before us : portraits in movement. Unpublished master's thesis. Bank Street College of Education, New York, NY.

Documents the experiences of dance students in a New York public high school. Students were asked to create portraits in movement exploring their own personal family history. Students had to select one family member over 55 years of age, interview them and choose one of the stories to create their portrait in movement.

Dental Phobia

This original guide is for child life specialists to help prepare preschoolers for dental visits. Included in the guide are actual pictures of dental equipment used in clinics. Also contains helpful educational advice for children on keeping their teeth healthy.

Ebonics

Fine, Laura B. (2006) The ebonics debate : a closer look at language, culture, and classroom instruction. Unpublished master's thesis. Bank Street College of Education, New York, NY.

This paper takes a closer look at the status of Ebonics. It identifies proponents and opponents in the debate. It also looks at the history of Black English vernacular and ways to approach it in the classroom.

Lesson Study

This study makes a framework for initiating Japanese lesson study, a professional development approach to teaching mathematics, into the U.S. education system. Lesson study involves teachers jointly planning, observing, revising, analyzing and refining a classroom lesson. The goal is for teachers to make ongoing improvements to instruction.

Manners

Kramer, Alayna M. (2006) Making manners matter : inside the elementary classroom and beyond. Unpublished master's thesis. Bank Street College of Education, New York, NY.

Starts from the premise that manners are absent from modern classrooms and that it is up to teachers to instruct children on their form and importance. Instilling manners in children is seen as an essential part of producing globally minded citizens. Suggestions are made as to how teachers can begin this work, e.g., through the work they do with parents, and the ways they conduct their classrooms.

Mathematics

Describes the results of three years of research, by a seventh and eighth grade teacher in her own classroom, on ways to implement sessions of accountable talk (also referred to as level three classroom discourse) into her mathematics program. The objective of this research is to promote student engagement and achievement.

Yeo, Lesley Liu-Pinn (2006) Visions of New York : an exploration of New York City through photography and writing. Unpublished master's thesis. Bank Street College of Education, New York, NY.

Presents a black and white photography project with third grade students in an independent, New York City school. As students became familiar with film photography they were encouraged to apply and bend rules to achieve their own unique perspective on the City.

Rotting Log Ecosystem

Dagress, Erika. (2006) Diminutive decomposer diversity : a first grade animal diversity curriculum based on a study of the decomposers in a rotting log ecosystem. Unpublished master's thesis. Bank Street College of Education, New York, NY.

A first grade science curriculum on the various creatures that live in a rotting log. Includes small studies where students observe as a scientist, look at a mealworm, and consider animal adaptations.

Shoes

An integrated social studies curriculum for first graders on the topic of shoes. Includes the following types of activities: visiting local shoe stores, turning the classroom into a student run shoe store; and dramatic play. The goal is for students to develop a scientific way of thinking about shoes.

Brahms, Lisa. (2006) Meeting on a margin : where thought fragments and scraps of meaning become pearls of possibility. Unpublished master's thesis. Bank Street College of Education, New York, NY.

Part book, part conceptual art piece. The goal of this study is to combine the worlds of constructivist and aesthetic education with that of Jewish learning. Structured like the Talmud, text is placed at the center of each page. Around this central text , interpretive commentators reflect on the central text, or link with other commentators on the page.
